1. ENERGY
Contrary to popular belief, energy is the most critical requirement not only for race horses, but for all other classes of horses like mares, foals, weanlings, yearlings, etc. It is, therefore, essential that the horse feeds should be high energy feeds. In spite of this, most horse feed contain low energy ingredients like lucerne, hay or poor quality oats. Since Blenheim feeds do not contain any of these low energy ingredients, the energy content is higher than that of most feeds.
2. PROTEIN
Generally, too much emphasis is put on the amount of protein and too little emphasis on the quality of protein and hence the amino acid balance in the feed. In order to ensure a better balance of amino acids, animal protein is used as part of the protein source.
The correct supply and balance of vitamins and minerals are very important to all classes of horses, but critical in the case of lactating mares, foals and weanlings. In foals the absence of certain minerals or an imbalance in the feed is the major cause of bone abnormalities.
